Sunflower Art Show will be on display during the entire month of July at The Bottling Works thanks to the efforts of the Hampshire County Arts Council. Contact Robin Pancake for inclusion in this Art Show.

The Sunflower Fest was organized by Romney ON TRAC to encourage and recognize the efforts of our community in enhancing the local landscape and providing a quality environment for our city. Romney ON TRAC has made a commitment to sustainable development and improving the visual environment.

Goals of Sunflower Fest 2011 include a Garden Walk, including Residential and Commercial Gardens as well as 3 new categories, Community/Neighborhood Gardens, Young Gardener and Best Kept Vegetable Garden. This is a great beautification project that gets the community working together to make this happen.

Another Goal of Sunflower Fest 2011 is to raise awareness for our local charities by raising funds for designated charities through our Sunflower Art Auction and giving these charities a chance to share information and recruit volunteers at our event. Sunflower Fest encourages a sense of community spirit by bringing such an interesting and varied group together in this worthwhile endeavor. Lastly, we want to provide an entertaining weekend of activities for the community as we meet these goals.

to Benefit Local Charity of Your Choice

Romney ON TRAC Sunflower Fest, scheduled for July 22nd and 23rd, 2011, announces Annual Sunflower Art Auction. Individuals, businesses & organizations are asked to purchase a plywood sunflower. This sunflower will be decorated by the sponsoring entity and/or their artist of choice. It can be painted, use mosaics, etc. Be Creative! Then it will be hung outside and auctioned off to benefit your favorite charity during the Sunflower Festival. You, as a business owner or organization, should involve your charity in promoting "your sunflower." Your charity might even like to help decorate the sunflower.

The Plywood Sunflowers are exterior grade and come in 2 sizes. They are already cut out in the shape of sunflowers. The cost per sunflower is:
2 feet diameter sunflower, cost $ 35 & 1 foot diameter sunflower, cost $ 25

The business or organization who purchases this sunflower will:

Choose a benefit charity for the proceeds from their auctioned sunflower.
Paint or decorate their sunflower.
Hang it in outside or display it and pass out literature to promote the Event.
Get the benefit charity involved and excited about the Sunflower Art Auction.

The Auction will be held on Saturday evening at The Bottlings Works on July 23rd. At the evening event we will also announce the results of the Garden Walk, eat BBQ, enjoy contests and good music. For further information, please contact:

Romney ON TRAC announces the 3rd Annual Sunflower Fest! Get your garden spruced up for this year's Garden Walk!

2011 Garden Walk will take place:

Winners will be announced on Saturday evening, July 23rd at the festivities at The Bottling Works.

Whether scary or funny, silly or ridiculous, this is your chance to express yourself and your business or organization!

Use your imagination, discarded old clothes, hats, gloves, and any other accessories you’ll need to make your scarecrow unforgettable!

Continuing the fun, and using the creativity of the community, the downtown will be decorated with scarecrows beginning Saturday, October 9th, 2010. This is a great way to usher in the beginning of the fall and winter holiday season for our downtown.

The culmination of the Scarecrow Decorating Event will be the weekend of Autumn in Romney, November 5, 6 and 7th which coincides with the GFC Woman’s Club Christmas House at Romney Elementary.

We expect this opportunity to showcase your business and talents to go fast as poles are limited. There is no charge to participate in this event.

FINE PRINT

Creators are responsible for attaching the scarecrows to their assigned light pole on Saturday, October 9th between 9 am and 1pm. No nails or screws will be used to attach scarecrows. Romney ON TRAC will supply the zippy-ties pr bailing twine needed so not to damage the light pole paint. Romney ON TRAC volunteers will be around for assistance. Scarecrow is to be removed by creator on Monday Nov 8th or Tuesday November 9th. Any remaining scarecrows will be thrown out and nothing kept.
Romney ON TRAC is not responsible for any losses to your scarecrow. You are expected to visit it periodically to make sure it is still in good shape and not an eyesore.
“Sponsored by” or Business advertising is allowed (tastefully) as part of the design. This plaque can not exceed 9x4 inches.
Scarecrow and surrounds can not impede sidewalk, parking meter, access from street to sidewalk or parking meters. Once assigned a pole or tree you might want to look at the location before deciding on your design.

Our kick-off to the scarecrows!

Calling all businesses, organizations, churches, individuals, government agencies and civic groups. Usher in Fall in Romney with beautiful fall leaves, pumpkins and Scarecrows! Choose your pole, tree or bench to decorate for the 1st Scarecrow Project in Romney! Reserve the pole of your choice today by calling Patty Anderson at 304.671.2369 or Dot Calvert at 304.822.5496. You can also submit your request for the pole you want by emailing RomneyWestVirginia@gmail.com. You will be notified immediately if the pole, tree, bench or post you requested is available. Please include a 2nd choice just in case.

31st Hampshire Heritage Fest Sept. 10-12

Hampshire Heritage Fest 2010

September 11th and 12th is the big Heritage weekend this year in Hampshire County, Wild and Wonderful, West Virginia’s first county. Since Romney changed hands 56 times during the War Between the States this year we are featuring Civil War battles with re-enactors, on foot and horseback and shooting cannons. Enjoy living history portrayals of various periods in history all weekend and a Civil War Square Dance on Friday night at the Fire Hall. Step back in time and visit the encampments and re-enactors.

The Potomac Eagle Scenic Train Excursion is running both days of Heritage Weekend. Saturday the train will depart at 11:30am for its breathtaking ride through "The Trough" of the South Branch of the Potomac. Hear the history of the valley on this marvelous 3 hour ride. Nesting pairs of bald eagles live in "The Trough" and have been sighted on 99% of the train rides! There are rumors that the Potomac Eagle will be raided by soldiers on horseback searching the train for Northern spies on Sunday afternoon. This is a special trainride on Sunday and it will depart Wapacoma Station at 1pm.

WV Wine tasting on Saturday and Sunday at Anderson's Corner with a limited edition special commemorative wine glass. Cost is $4 and you can keep the glass! Anderson's offers wine from 6 West Virginia wineries. Live music at the Wine Tasting on Saturday with Bob and Karyn Garel.

New this year is Championship Lumberjack competition on Saturday Sept. 11th. For those looking for fine crafts, we have regional crafters and demonstrations all weekend long.

Another great event on Sunday is the Antique and Vintage Car Show sponsored by the Mountain Cruisers.

Let’s not forget our simple pleasures------Food and music. Food vendors featuring funnel cakes, fried oreo's, steak subs, sausages, cotton candy, hamburgers/hot dogs and homemade lemonade. Entertainment ranging from bluegrass to Patsy Cline to Gospel and don’t forget our concert on Saturday night from 8-12 featuring 8Livespent.

Sunflower Fest 2010 - Thanks to Everyone!

Sunflower Fest 2010 was held on Saturday, July 24th this year. The Garden Walk included 18 Participants this year. The gorgeous gardens were open for public tours from 1 til 4 pm that Saturday. Immediately after the Garden Walk, people began pouring into the Bottling Works for the evening Events which included many “Sunflower” contests, a BBQ dinner and some scrumptious home baked desserts, highlighted by the Auction of Wooden Sunflowers to benefit Local Charities. All 19 Sunflowers were locally sponsored and decorated.

Sunflower Fest 2010 would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful event sponsors. Sue Smith Bakery won Most Attractive Yard for a Business, Dillon’s Country Treasures won Most Attractive Storefront.

Lots of fun and competitions on Saturday Evening at The Bottling Works. Thanks to Chelsea Kuykendall and Callie....... (call Jennie Mathias for spelling) for doing Face Painting for everyone. We had 7 Participants in the Silk Arrangement Competition. 1st Place went to Janet Haines, 2nd Place to Kim Mayhew and 3rd Place to Judy Blaha.

There were 10 competitors in the Sunflower Hat Contest.Belinda Shoemaker won Best Hat in the Show, Mikayle Shank won the prize for Most Unique Hat, Jean Shoemaker won for Most Colorful Hat and V. Lynn Moore won the Hat Re-Gift Category.

The contests were fun and very popular with the folks attending. The Little Sunflower Outfit Contest for ages 0 to 10 years old was a big hit. The children were adorable! 8 children participated. All the children were winners! Thanks to Eileen Johnson for Overseeing the Little Sunflower Outfit Contest and to Brenna Young, Miss Outstanding Teen for Hampshire County, who assisted her. Thanks also to our judges, Linda Davis, Larry Johnson, Officer Gunther Heinz and Kendra Wolford, Little Miss Sunshine 2009.

Thanks to the Millstone BBQ for a great dinner and to Larry Brown, Jan Gillies and The Mountain Momma Band for the enjoyable music.

Sunflower Fest 2010 was held on Saturday, July 24th this year. The Garden Walk included 18 Participants this year. The gorgeous gardens were open for public tours from 1 til 4 pm that Saturday. Immediately after the Garden Walk, people began pouring into the Bottling Works for the evening Events which included many “Sunflower” contests, a BBQ dinner and some scrumptious home baked desserts, highlighted by the Auction of Wooden Sunflowers to benefit Local Charities. All 19 Sunflowers were locally sponsored and decorated.

Sunflower Fest 2010 would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful event sponsors. Then the Wooden Sunflowers will be auctioned off to the highest bidder and all the proceeds will go to the benefit Charity.

Firehouse Chili Cook Off -August 15th at Romney Sunflower Fest

Join your friends and neighbors for a fun filled afternoon in the Romney Fire Hall parking lot! Bring your pop up tents and your decorations and your homemade chili and salsa to the 1st Annual Firehouse Chili Cook Off held at the Romney Fire Hall Saturday, August 15th.
Opens to the Public at 11am until 4pm with live music on the brand new stage at the Fire Hall, great food,. great fun and great chili! The Romney Volunteer Fire Company will offer BBQ, beer and other beverages while you are getting the chili ready!

The Fire Company will have the area roped off area for competitors and will offer an 8' table and electrical outlet to competitors.

Chili makers, bring your own "booth" and all your friends to vote for you for Best Booth Award! Be creative, decorate your booth and win the grand surprise "Best Booth Award!"

The chili will be judged on the following characteristicsby impartial judges: good flavor, aroma, blend of spices, color, consistency, and texture.

8:00am Fire House Cook Off Area open to Chili Cook Off competitors.

10:00am Short Meeting with all competitors at the Fire House. Each competitor will be allowed 2 free passes for their booth.
All competitors will be given a number and containers for Chili and/or Salsa with the same number on them. Competitors will deliver
the filled containers to the judging area by the times listed below to qualify for judging in that category.
There are No Rules for where Salsa and Chili are made. Salsa and Chili may be made onsite or at home.

Romney, West Virginia's First Town

Romney is West Virginia's oldest town. Incorporated in 1762, Romney will celebrate its 250th birthday in 2012. http://www.historichampshire.org/history/romneyfound.htm. Rich in history and beauty, Romney sits alongside the headwaters of the Potomac River. Romney lies along the Northwestern Turnpike (now Rt. 50) beside the headwaters of the Potomac River. In 1748 sixteen year old George Washington came to Hampshire County to survey the original Lord Fairfax land grant.

Romney is the county seat of Hampshire County which has 650 square miles of territory and less than 22,000 in population. This population swells on the weekends with people from the Washington DC/Baltimore area who have 2nd homes here. Romney is only 100 miles west of Washington DC and has around 2000 residents inside the city limits. The beautiful rolling hills are full of fruit orchards and the Farmer's Market in downtown Romney is an eclectic mix of produce, baked goods, herbs and plants, artisans and musicians. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from May through October the Farmer's Market is a delightful experience.

The orchard country lends itself well to vineyards and there are 3 WV wineries within 30 minutes of Romney. Romney offers Washingtonians and city dwellers "southern hospitality" and a friendly getaway small town atmosphere. Several evenings a week, local musicians 'jam' on the sidewalk at Potomac Music on Main Street entertaining passersby. The local Arts Council and the Loy Foundation offer continual cultural opportunities with concerts, art exhibits, studio tours and more. Downtown shops and public buildings have local art exhibits, classes, and feature local musicians, artisans and writers.

Arguably one of the finest train excursions in the country, the historic Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad excursion is a 3.5 hour narrated ride through "The Trough" area of the South Branch of the Potomac River. Over 20,000 people annually enjoy the trainride and the pristine beauty of the valley and its wildlife. Sighted on over 90% of the trips, bald eagles will sometimes fly alongside the train and swope down and go fishing in the river or they may be seen sitting on their nests in the trees along the river. The valley's rich history is narrated during the ride, highlighted by George Washington's 3 year sojourn beginning in 1748 in Hampshire County surveying the land for Lord Fairfax & the best preserved trenches from the War Between the States at Fort Mill Ridge. Restoration of the old railroad cars & engines as well as the scenic excursion are the work of owners, David Corbitt & Dan Snyder, CSX engineers with lifelong interests in railroading.
