Romney Celebrates It's 250th Birthday During 2012

Settled in the early 1700's Romney was the first chartered town in West Virginia. Romney is an original Lord Fairfax Land Grant and the survey team for Lord Fairfax starting in 1848 included the 16 year old George Washington.

Romney was chartered on Dec. 23rd, 1762 by the Virginia House of Burgesses and was declared the oldest city in what is now West Virginia by the WV Legislature.

2012, the 250th birthday of Romney holds many exciting and historical events. Visit www.Romney250Celebration.com for upcoming events.

The Period Clothing Fashion Show and Workshop held February 25th was a great success. Over 50 models participated in an effort to instill interest in the community in living history and "Finding Your Character," getting dressed up and having some fun at our Romney 250 events.

Goals of Sunflower Fest 2011 include a Garden Walk, including Residential and Commercial Gardens as well as 3 new categories, Community/Neighborhood Gardens, Young Gardener and Best Kept Vegetable Garden. This is a great beautification project that gets the community working together to make this happen.

Another Goal of Sunflower Fest 2011 is to raise awareness for our local charities by raising funds for designated charities through our Sunflower Art Auction and giving these charities a chance to share information and recruit volunteers at our event. Sunflower Fest encourages a sense of community spirit by bringing such an interesting and varied group together in this worthwhile endeavor. Lastly, we want to provide an entertaining weekend of activities for the community as we meet these goals.

  • Paint or decorate their sunflower.
  • Hang it in outside or display it and pass out literature to promote the Event.
  • Get the benefit charity involved and excited about the Sunflower Art Auction.
